A Law Departments Workshop

The Law Department held a workshop on 29th and 30th November 2021 entitled “The Legal Basis of the Electoral System in Iraq”. The main topics were discussed over two consecutive days as follows: On the first day, Monday, 29/11/2021: Dr. Ibrahim Ahmed Al-Samarrai gave a lecture entitled “The Iraqi Election Law”, which is effective, indicating the most important legal texts contained in it and what was applied in the early elections of 2021. And Dr. Omar Zubair Zahir gave a lecture entitled “The Iraqi Party Law” with an analytical presentation in which he addressed the extent to which this law is applied to the formation and organization of parties in Iraq.

On the second day, Tuesday, 30th November 2021: Dr. Younis Salah al-Din presented a lecture entitled “Guarantees of civil and political rights in the Iraqi electoral law” and their compatibility with the rules of public international law and private international law. Mrs. Laila Issa Abul-Qassem gave a lecture entitled “Early Elections, a People’s Demand”, she spoke on the legal and constitutional basis for early elections, even if they were a popular demand for democracy to be achieved. Dr. Ismail Rasoul also presented a lecture entitled “Elections Results and Their Impact on Government Formation”, explaining how early elections can affect the government. After each lecture, discussions were interrupted by the attendees through questions from the attendees, which enriched the workshop and increased its importance and stood out as the most important results.
