Cihan University–Erbil Hosts International Workshop on Osteoporosis Awareness and Diagnostic Innovations

The Department of Radiological Imaging Technologies (RIT) at Cihan University–Erbil organized an international scientific workshop titled “Strong Bones for Life: Osteoporosis Awareness” on Sunday, 25 January 2026. The workshop was held in the VIP Hall on the university campus and was attended by academic staff, medical students, and healthcare professionals.

The workshop featured an impactful virtual presentation by Dr. Batool Abdulkareem, a specialist at the National Health Service (NHS), London, United Kingdom. Dr. Abdulkareem delivered a comprehensive overview of the latest international standards and clinical applications in the diagnosis of osteoporosis. She highlighted Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) as the global gold standard for assessing bone mineral density and emphasized its critical role in early diagnosis and fracture-risk reduction.

In addition, Dr. Reem J. Al-Hafidh, a faculty member at Cihan University–Erbil, presented a scientific lecture defining osteoporosis and identifying high-risk population groups. She stressed the importance of early awareness, preventive strategies, and routine screening in reducing bone injuries and promoting long-term musculoskeletal health.

Further contributing to the academic program, Assistant Lecturer Asmaa Ameen Ghareeb, also a faculty member at the university, delivered a presentation focusing on osteoporosis prevention and disease management. Her lecture highlighted essential medical screening procedures for early detection and discussed evidence-based clinical protocols for managing diagnosed patients to improve quality of life and functional outcomes.

The workshop concluded with an interactive scientific discussion involving speakers and attendees, focusing on recent technological advancements in radiological imaging—particularly DEXA scanning—and their role in enhancing public health awareness. The event reaffirmed Cihan University–Erbil’s commitment to promoting early screening, evidence-based practice, and adherence to international diagnostic standards to mitigate the long-term impact of osteoporosis.
