On Tuesday, 28 October 2025, the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Cihan University–Erbil organized a scientific workshop titled “The Role of Nutrition in Osteoporosis.” The workshop was attended by Prof. Dr. Ayad Hazim Hassan, Vice President for Scientific Affairs, along with academic staff and students from various departments across the university.
The session was delivered by Assistant Lecturer Ahmed Nabaz Khaleel, who provided an evidence-based overview of how nutritional factors influence bone remodeling throughout the lifespan. Key topics included daily calcium requirements and bioavailable food sources; vitamin D synthesis, safe sun exposure, and supplementation ranges; the supportive roles of vitamin K, magnesium, and phosphorus; and the impact of protein intake on bone matrix formation. The workshop also highlighted how excessive sodium and caffeine consumption may increase calcium loss.
Comparative discussions addressed calcium absorption from dairy products, fortified alternatives, and leafy green vegetables, with particular attention to the effects of oxalates and phytates on nutrient bioavailability. Practical segments focused on reading nutrition labels for fortified foods, planning meals to distribute calcium intake evenly throughout the day, and identifying suitable dietary options for individuals with lactose intolerance.
A case-based exercise allowed participants to apply counseling strategies using a sample bone-health profile. This activity covered supplement timing, interactions with commonly prescribed osteoporosis medications, hydration strategies, and the integration of nutritional guidance with weight-bearing and resistance exercises to reduce fracture risk. Participants were provided with educational handouts, including portion equivalents and a daily bone-health nutrient checklist.
By the conclusion of the workshop, attendees demonstrated improved ability to design osteoporosis-friendly menus, assess calcium and vitamin D adequacy, and provide clear guidance on the appropriate use of supplements and fortified foods. The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics will share the workshop materials with academic classes and incorporate them into upcoming nutrition counseling practice sessions.
