The Department of Biomedical Sciences promotes breast cancer awareness through statistical analysis. As part of the Pink October activities and the ongoing breast cancer awareness program, the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Cihan University-Erbil organized a workshop titled “Understanding Breast Cancer Through Statistics” on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, in the VIP Hall at Cihan University-Erbil.
The workshop was presented by Dr. Janar Ali Sangawi, a general surgeon and head of the Cancer Control Department at the Kurdistan Regional Ministry of Health. The workshop was attended by Professor Dr. Ayad Hazim, Assistant President for Scientific Affairs at the University, a number of department heads, faculty members, and university students from various departments, in addition to Mr. Walid Haider, Executive Director of Ashti Health Organization, and Ms. Karbin Karkhi Omar, the organization’s co-founder.
During her lecture, Dr. Janar addressed statistical data on breast cancer at the global and Iraqi levels, noting that according to 2024 data issued by the Iraqi Ministry of Health, 9,043 cases of breast cancer were recorded, representing 19.5% of the total 46,682 recorded cancer cases, making it the most common type of cancer in Iraq.
Dr. Janar also addressed the most prominent factors contributing to the increased incidence of breast cancer in Iraq, including delays in seeking medical attention, limited screening and mammography services, and a shortage of specialized healthcare personnel. She emphasized the importance of breast self-examination as an effective means of early detection, explaining that cases detected in their early stages have a 99% cure rate.
At the conclusion of the workshop, Dr. Janar expressed her gratitude to the Department of Biomedical Sciences and all attendees. On behalf of the department, Professor Mirza Hamza Hammadi presented Dr. Janar with a certificate of appreciation and a shield of honor in recognition of her valuable contribution to supporting the breast cancer awareness program.
